  • Danbury High School, West Side Middle School Academy, Huaxia Chinese School and local Chinese communities will host a celebration of the Chinese New Year, the Year of  Dog, on Saturday, February 24 in the High School auditorium.  The event starts at 2pm. We will begin with activities such as calligraphy, interactive games, chopstick competition, red Chinese envelopes with real money, and a raffle drawing. The performance begins at 3pm, featuring folk dance, singing, and traditional musical instruments.  Come and enjoy the spirit of the greatest Chinese holiday, XING NIAN.
  • Good morning DHS, remember to take a breath. Don’t stress over what you can’t control.
  • There will be a girls tennis meeting for all those interested in playing this spring on today, Feb. 22nd at 2:15 in room E295.
  • The Young Republicans will meet after school today, Thursday Feb. 22nd, in room D268. New members are welcome!
  • Attention Seniors, the DHS Student Recognition Awards application is now available on Naviance. The application must be submitted to your counselor by March 9th.
  • Any young lady interested in trying out for the Varsity Girl’s Golf team please attend a brief meeting in Coach Boucher’s room, D 482, on Monday, February 26th from 2:00 – 2:30.  Any questions, stop by to see Coach in her room, D 482.
  • There will be a meeting for all boys lacrosse players next Wed., Feb 28th at 2:15 in room E295.  If you cannot make meeting, please see Coach Kersten in room D178 or Coach Purdy in the athletic wing.
  • The Black Lives Matter Club presents “In Your Element,” the first annual celebration of Black History and Culture tomorrow, February 23rd. Come to the DHS cafeteria from 6-9pm tomorrow for good music and cultural appreciation. Tickets are $5 and can be bought at the door, see you there.
  • The after school study session for ESL students who are registered to take the AP Spanish exam in May is canceled for this afternoon.

Sports announcements

  • Congratulations to the girls’ track & field team, which placed second at the State Open Championships on Saturday. The team was led by outstanding performances from Cassandra Sturdevant, who was second in the 1000 meters in 3:04.12; Leah Sarkisian, who was 5th in the 600 with a time of 1:37.21; Celyna Custodio, who was third in the shot put with a throw of 38 feet 8 inches; Meilee Kry, who was 5th in the long jump with a jump of 17 feet and one half inch; and Lauren Moore’s school record performance in the 1600 with a time of 5:07.21, which won the State Open Championship. Lauren also finished fourth in the 3200 with an outstanding time of 11:20.  
  • Congratulations to the Hatters Wrestling team, which won the State LL title this weekend with a team score of 275. There were 5 individual title winners as well as 6 additional place finishers. The boys move on to the State Opens this coming weekend with their eye on a second consecutive team title.
  • Congratulations to the boys’ indoor track & field team, which won the CT State Open team championship this past Saturday  The team was lead with Malcolm Going winning the 600m in a school record time, Nathaniel Llanos was 2nd in the pole vault, Dan Nichols was 2nd in the two mile.  Sean Michael Parkinson, Glenroy Ford, Malachi Lorick and Malcolm Going won the 4×400 relay and was 2nd in the 4×200 relay.

  • There will be a meeting for all those interested in trying out for the Boys Volleyball team on Tuesday, February 20th, after school in E295.
  • There will be a girls tennis meeting for all those interested in playing this spring on Thursday Feb. 22nd at 2:15 in room E295.
  • Girls’ track members competing at Eastern States championship will be dismissed after 7th period. Everyone else has practice at the normal time.
  • The boys’ Outdoor Track and Field team will have a pre-season meeting tomorrow, Wednesday Feb 21st after school from 2:05-2:30 in the cafeteria.  All interested in sprinting, jumping, hurdling and throwing stop by and see what we are all about.

Sports announcements

  • The wrestling team continues their FCIAC dominance with their 8th straight title! Congratulations go to the whole team led by individual title holders, Gino Baratta, AJ Kovacs, Ryan Jack, Ben LeBlanc and Liam Knight. 
  • Congratulations to the girls track & field team on their second place finish at the State Class LL championship on Saturday. The team was led by Lauren Moore’s victories in the 1600, 3200 in times of 5:10, 11:13.  
  • The boys Indoor Track and Field team ran, hurdled, jumped and threw their way to the State Class LL Championship Saturday.  This was the 5th consecutive title for our track program!  Malcolm Going won the individual 600m tittle, Sean Michael Parkinson, Malcolm Going, Glenroy Ford and Malachi Lorick won both the 4×200 and 4×400 relays.

  • Lauren Moore, Danbury Track. Moore wins this week’s Athletic Gaines-Ruden Report Female Player of the Week after winning the 1,600 and 3,200 at the FCIAC Championships.

  • HELLO DHS!  Today marks the final day of the Start with Hello – Week of Inclusion. Thank you to all who helped make this project come true, it was a great success. A take away that we hope everyone gets from this event is that even when the week of inclusion is over, the act of including doesn’t cease. We challenge everyone to carry on the positive, inclusive attitude that was on display this week for the rest of the year. Thank you DHS!

AMC Test inclement weather schedule

  • Due to a possibility for snow tomorrow the following are contingency plans for possible changes in the AMC testing times:
  • Delayed Start: AMC will run from period 1 to period 3.  Students will report directly to the cafeteria for period 1.
  • Emergency Early Dismissal: AMC will be cancelled for this year
  • No School: AMC will be canceled for this year

  • Hey DHS! I mean, Hello! – “Start with Hello” begins tomorrow in the cafeteria during all lunch periods. Tomorrow you will be asked to say “hey” and join fellow students and faculty in transforming the cafeteria bulletin boards into a wall of positivity. In addition, name tags will be handed out for those who wish to participate in “Hey-Day.” Make sure you stop by our table for further information!
  • Congratulations to the Varsity cheerleading squad! The team won the FCIAC cheerleading championship this past Saturday and had the highest score out of all divisions, earning them the grand champion award. In addition, congratulations to Sydnei Brimage, Lauryn Menzie and Aryanna DaSilva for making the All-FCIAC team, which is comprised of the top 20 cheerleaders from all of the teams combined.
  •  Three DHS Band students were named to the All-State Band over the weekend. After competing with thousands of students from throughout Connecticut, juniors Jacob Laham and Micah Chen as well as sophomore Brady Callaghan will perform in the All-State concert this May.
  • Reminder to all students attending the Post University Trip tomorrow: Please report to the auditorium after 1st period tomorrow morning. The bus will leave promptly at 8:15 a.m. If you have yet to hand in your permission slip, please turn in to Mr. Boucher or Mr. Dittmar by the end of the day.
  • AMERICAN MATHEMATICS COMPETITION (AMC). The AMC will take place on Wednesday, February 7th during periods 2 and 3 in the cafeteria. Students will be circulating with field trip forms to inform you they will be out of your class. Study halls period 1-3 will be in the auditorium that day.
  • Attention Juniors and Seniors: The School Counseling Department is sponsoring a trip to Post University TOMORROW, February 6th Periods 2-6. If you are interested please stop by to see Mr. Boucher or Mr. Dittmar. There are limited spots available so act quickly.
  • Feb. 5th, 1994, white supremacist Byron de la Beckwith was convicted of civil rights activist Medgar Evers’ murder, more than thirty years after he was shot in the back from ambush. Evers was the state’s field secretary for the NAACP. He recruited members throughout Mississippi and organized voter-registration efforts, demonstrations, and economic boycotts of white-owned companies that practiced discrimination. He also worked to investigate crimes perpetrated against blacks, most notably the lynching of Emmett Till, a 14-year-old boy who had been killed for talking to a white woman.

Holder serves on a number of philanthropic boards, including the Columbia University board, the Save the Children Foundation, and Concerned Black Men, a group that seeks to help troubled youth in D.C.

  • On Feb. 1st, 1960 America was introduced to its first ever sit-in. It was demonstrated by four Black college students, Ezell Blair Jr., David Richmond, Franklin McCain, and Joseph McNeil. On this date they sat at a segregated lunch counter in Greensboro, North Carolina and refused to give up their seats, after being denied service. In the summer of 1960 many southern restaurants were integrated because of this first ever national sit-In.

  • The Girls’ Indoor Track & Field team won the FCIAC Western Division Championship Saturday. The team was led by strong performances in all event groups. The Lady Hatters are in action next at Thursday’s FCIAC championship meet.

  • Congratulations to the girls’ Track & Field team for its performances at the Yale Classic last weekend. The Distance Medley relay team of Alex Chakar, Olivia Turk, Cassandra Sturdevant, and Lauren Moore finish fifth and ran the No. 10 time in the country this season. Celyna Custodio finished third in the shot put and the 4×200 meter relay team of Erika Regus, Meilee Kry, Natalee Seipio and Jessica Glowacki finished second and ran the No. 2 time in the state.
