Target Cancelled for Showing Pride
June 5, 2023
Target is a general merchandise retailer with over 3000 stores in all 50 states. Target has built its brand on selling quality products at a cheap price with a tagline reading, “Expect More. Pay Less.” However, Target is also known in a negative light by conservatives for its display of LGBTQ+ pride products. CNN Business states, “During every Pride Month in June for the past decade, Target has sold merchandise for LGBTQ customers, employees, and allies. But this year, Target faced an anti-LGBTQ campaign that went viral on social media” (CNN Business). NPR states, “Target is removing some merchandise celebrating Pride Month from store shelves after facing a backlash against the products, including threats against the safety of its workers. The retail giant said in a statement posted on its website Wednesday, that it was committed to celebrating the LGBTQIA+ community but was withdrawing some items over threats that were “impacting our team members’ sense of safety and well-being” on the job. “Given these volatile circumstances, we are making adjustments to our plans, including removing items that have been at the center of the most significant confrontational behavior,” the company said (NPR). Movements against LGBTQ+ rights threatened the safety of every target establishment and its employees, forcing said establishments to remove all products relating to the LGBTQ+ community, such as anything with a rainbow flag or transgender adult-friendly clothing. Kelly Robinson, president of the Human Rights Campaign, stated, “The LGBTQ+ community has celebrated Pride with Target for the past decade. Target needs to stand with us and double down on their commitment to us.” “(NPR). However, as of late, due to constant threats, it is also facing backlash from the LGBTQ+ community itself. NBC News said, “So disappointed in @target right now,” one TikTok user wrote in a caption to a video apparently recorded at a Target location in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. “You literally hid your LGBTQ ‘support’ so as to not offend hateful, small-minded people. Don’t seem too concerned about offending your own employees and loyal customers, though.” (NBC NEWS). Target, now facing backlash from both conservatives and LGBTQ+ activists, is put in a predicament where it seems they cannot succeed.
