Danbury wrestling pins high points at LL’s and Open
March 4, 2016
Danbury wrestling is known far and wide for its past achievements.
The past few weeks have portrayed several strong performances from the Danbury wrestlers as they won their 29th FCIAC Championship in the past thirty years, another win at the Class LL Championships, and a second-place team finish at the Connecticut State Open.
Danbury won the Class LL championships with a score of 268.5 points over their rivals from Fairfield-Warde with a score of 202. The team had 1st or 3rd place finishers in 10 of the 14 weight classes, amounting to an extremely large amount of points for Danbury.
“Winning LL’s felt really nice” said senior captain Justin Peterson. “The team worked very hard in season and in the offseason leading up. It’s satisfying to know that the hard work payed off.” Peterson finished 3rd place in the competitive 145 lb weight class.
Despite a tremendous lead at the Class meet, the Hatters narrowly lost the State Open to New Fairfield, 115.5-112.5.
“We took second at States — we lost by three points. It was a heartbreaking loss, but it serves as the motivation we need for a New England title, which is up for grabs this year” said captain Joey Hulse. “It’s an honor to be a part of this team, but it’s a lot of hard work.”
State Open highlights include a first-place finish for Jakob Camacho in the 113 lb weight class, a 3rd place finish for Kyle Fields in the 120 lb weight class, and a narrow 2nd place finish for Jeremy Fields in the 138 lb weight class. Fields lost through points.
“Opens was challenging for us, plus the LL was a hard qualifier for the Open. We didn’t qualify as many athletes as we had hoped,” explained Coach Rick Shook. “At New Englands we hope to get four placers. We’ll see. At nationals we hope to get an All-American.
Off to the New Englands this weekend are Jacob Camacho, Kyle Fields, Jeremy Fields, Andrew Marquis, and Sam Mortara.
Update: Jeremy Field takes New England title in 138 lb weight class. Jakob Camacho takes second in the 113 lb weight class. “Connecticut was great overall, even the guys from our area,” said Danbury coach
Ricky Shook. “This is another stud tournament, and to come away with champions is what we come here for. We wrestled really well.” (Newstimes.com)
