Danbury Track and Field has a dramatic postseason
March 4, 2016
It is not uncanny for Danbury Track and Field to end a season with a bang. The Hatters this past February swept all 4 Championship Meets-Western Divisionals, The FCIAC Conference, Class LL’s, and finally, the State Open. Nine Danbury Athletes would proceed to the New England Championships, and most achieved All-New England status.
The Danbury Varsity 4x800m team of senior Tim Moore, junior Trevor Reed, senior Jake Roberts, and junior Terrell Cunningham, brought home the Indoor New England Championship winning plaque in a time of 7:55.46. After dropping the baton during a hand-off and decreasing from 1st place to 9th mid-race, the team swung back into first and narrowly won by half a second. The same team will run the Championship section at the national championships in mid-march.
“I’m happy the team came out on top. I made a mistake at the end of my leg handing off to Trevor, but still dropped the fastest split I’ve ever managed before” gasped Moore moments after the relay concluded. Trevor Reed was also ecstatic. “I’d like to thank my mom, dad, coach, and teammates for today. What a great day.” relieved Reed when Cunningham brought home the baton in first place.
Senior Devonte Clarke would take 4th in the 55 Meter Dash in a time of 6.64. “I’m not satisfied with 4th place” remarked Clarke, “But I’ll return to the 55 meter dash at nationals in the emerging elite section.”
Terrell Cunningham returned to the track to run the 600m just an hour and a half after anchoring the 4x800m. Dropping an unbelievably fast time, Cunningham won the second heat in a time of 1:21:5 and shattering the previous school record of 1:23:00 of Austin Winter in 2012. Cunningham would take 4th overall, claiming his second All-New England medal that day.
Jack Adamski would enter the fast heat of the Two-Mile seeded 5th. An extremely draining and fast paced race led by All-American competitors gave Adamski a true run for his money. “It was a tough race. I’ve ran an intense two-mile every single week for the past month and a half-my legs were tired.” Adamski would take 8th, and missed All-New England by two spots, despite giving everything he had. “Coming up short of All-New England was unfortunate, but it was good big-race experience to help me prepare for our upcoming races at New Balance Nationals.”
The New England Championships concluded with the 4x400m relay. Danbury represented with Clark leading off to senior Jonathan Bartley, then to Roberts, and then to Cunningham who would anchor for his third race. Danbury won the second heat by a long stretch in a time of 3:25.56, taking 4th overall. The 4 athletes were all awarded with All-New England Honors. Cunningham was the only athlete in six states to claim indoor track All-New England status 3 times this year.
The Hatters would return home late Sunday night, and then back to the armory track in NYC not 48 hours later for the Eastern State Championships. The Distance Medley Relay of Reed in the 1200m leg, Roberts the 400m leg, Cunningham the 800m leg, and Adamski anchoring the 1600m leg would stand out from Danbury running a time of 10:22:68. Although the Hatters relay took third at Eastern States, they are currently ranked 5th in the United States, and will return for the championship section at Nationals.
