Victoria’s Secret has been the worldwide definition of glamor and on October 14, 2024, recently made a grand return to the spotlight.
The newest runway captured the attention of millions of fans. Although the company has faced many controversies of body positivity in their older years, there seems to be a large shift on the runway to include a new diverse lineup of models.
There have been many different thoughts about the shift in the fashion show – as one fan Salma Vega aptly put it, “I think it gives girls more confidence in the way they look when they see a VS angel similar to them on the runway… [Victoria Secret is ] more open to new people rather than just looks like before.” This new change allows a much wider audience to feel empowered in their own skin. Although the shift has brought great feedback, some can’t help but wonder if they are actually doing it for the right reasons.
An article “Victoria’s Secret Marketing Strategies and A Look At The 2024 Performative Rebrand” breaks down Victoria’s Secret growth strategy and how this shift may show a “Lack of Authenticity.” The website says, “The timing of the rebranding seemed reactionary rather than proactive. Marketers should prioritize listening to both existing and potential customers, striking a balance between adaptation and loyalty to the brand’s heritage.” The rebranding of the company may have been fueled by pressure rather than their original strategies. The importance of being able to be progressive, while also finding that balance of staying within core values in order to sustain the happiness of new and current customers is adherent in this website.
The older shows of the iconic runways still leave an everlasting impression on fans. Vega also adds that she “absolutely [loves] the old shows, the unique themes, music, and iconic models always made the runway special.” The 2000’s runway shows always had its criticism and controversies, — but there seems to be a sort of nostalgia for the long-time watchers of Victoria Secret. Traditionally, the older shows preferred more tall and thinner models, but now as the newest runway hit the screens, there is a change to what was once a core stance for the company.
The importance of having diversity and inclusivity is significant, especially in a day and age where being inclusive is much more important than what it once was when the show first made its most popular debut. Audiences want to see actual sincerity from the companies they love. There also needs to be a drive for companies to truly care about empowering all, instead of just trying to catch on to the newest and latest trends.
