At Danbury High School, there is a variety of cliques, personalities, and styles all unique to each individual student. In an effort to unite all of the students and showcase the power of fashion, the DHS fashion club was created. This club helps inspire students to dress in a way that makes them feel confident through showcasing all the ways you can express yourself through clothing. This is approached in a few different ways, the main two being their social media and by releasing their own magazine.
The fashion club is most well known for their TikTok videos interviewing students about their outfits. Club members will pull random students to ask them about a variety of topics relating to fashion. This provides students the opportunity to express their opinions on current and general fashion trends. Videos have asked students what they enjoy and dislike in fashion, one video specifically asking what their favorite winter fashion trend was. This yielded many different answers such as fur coats, leg warmers, and ear muffs.
Another series featured on their TikTok page was from DHS spirit week 10/21/24 to 10/25/24 where they showcased peoples’ outfits following the spirit week themes. One way they did this was by showcasing clips of many students dressed festively for school, specifically on the days themed class colorwars and school colors. In another video that week, vice president Ashley Da Silva acted as the interviewer and asked people what they wanted to bring back from the 80’s in the theme of throwback day. Many of these answers were fashion-related and allowed viewers to get a better look about how much fashion can vary throughout time.
Their most recent project is producing a magazine titled ADOLESCENTS showcasing all things fashion, ranging from history of fashion to shipping tips. The entire production is student-led; all of the models and writers are members of the club.
A recurring section featured in the magazine is titled “Student Celebrity” in which students will talk about their own personal fashion sense, answering questions like “Who or what has had a great influence on your sense of style?” or “What are you wearing when you feel most like yourself?” This gives direct insight into what goes into people choosing an outfit and explaining how freeing it is when you finally find a style that fits you. This truly showcases the entire purpose of the magazine which is to provide an accepting community that allows students to be authentic to themselves.
The club is looking for new members all year round and gives a great opportunity to feel the empowerment that can come from dressing to personal preference. Reading their magazine or watching their videos on social media gives a great look into what the club stands for as a whole and the power that you gain when you take control of wearing what you want.
