For the past four years, the Female Empowerment Club at Danbury High School has been working to create a stronger, more supportive environment for young women. Created to address the need for female support within the school, the club has become a way for students to discuss ideas, self-reflect, and plan activities that benefit all members of the club.
The club’s advisor, Monique Brown, continues to work with the group to build a better foundation for female students at DHS and ensure their voices are being heard. Throughout the years, the Female Empowerment Club has been a part of several impactful activities, one of which is making menstrual products more available in womens’ bathrooms. Most of this is being done by creating posters, being strong advocates within the school, and reaching out to those in charge to make a change. The group has n
ot only focused on ways to help the school, but also on improving themselves from within by creating vision boards for themselves.
The club members advocate for other students and improve awareness within themselves. They do so in the hopes of improving their well-being and serving their community. They are currently working on beginning a mentorship program with the local middle schools, offering younger students an outlet for support and guidance once they reach high school. In the end, this will create more empowered young women and build connections with other young women to make the transition from middle school to high school easier.
Students and faculty have recognized the positive changes the club has brought to DHS. The school has grown more accommodating, giving students more chances to express themselves and have conversations about female empowerment. The club keeps pushing for more, making sure that all women feel empowered and encouraged.
