Movie Review: 10 Cloverfield Lane

Joy-Anne Foster, Staff Writer

Hitting the box office this past weekend was the suspenseful thriller 10 Cloverfield Lane that is a spin off/sister movie from the 2008 Cloverfield, (but is by no means a sequel) produced by J.J. Abrams.

After being told that a “doomsday” is in full force, Michelle (Mary Winstead, most recently of Kill the Messenger) wakes up confined to a mattress on the floor of a stranger’s bunker.

As the summary itself reveals, most of the movie shows the buildup of tensions between the three main characters in the boundaries of 10 Cloverfield.

John Goodman plays the very suspicious “capturer” and former marine, Howard.

Throughout the movie you will be left questioning his genuineness. I mean he has all the proof, but would anyone really believe that an extraterrestrial attack is happening to the outside world, if they just got smashed into the side of the road and mysteriously rescued?

Well, Michelle didn’t either and from the time she gains consciousness, she devises an escape route out of the place.

But Michelle is not alone down there — Emmett (John Gallagher Jr., of HBO’s The Newsroom), who spent time in the Navy, helps her in her plan.

Howard’s “act of kindness” turns against him, as both residents of his bunker find ways to overthrow him.

Going into the movie not expecting much and not knowing of any plot summary at all, it definitely pleases and left me thoroughly shocked.

Although, if you are someone looking for constant action this may not be the movie for you, as things don’t pick up until the last half an hour of the movie.

The suspense is what makes this movie a good watch.

Is Howard delirious, criminal, or just a man who is thoroughly prepared for an apocalypse?

Will Michelle and Emmett make it out alive?

If you’re still unsure about whether this movie is good enough for you, 10 Cloverfield Lane accumulated $25 million in its opening weekend (ibtimes.com) and is No. 2 in box office (boxofficemojo.com).

You can expect that “something is coming” with a surprising plot twist at the end. The movie is playing at the AMC Theaters in Danbury.
