With the end of the school year quickly approaching, Danbury High School’s seniors are thrilled to finally take part in the ancient tradition of Senior Skip Day on May 27th. Junior and senior year are often the most intensive for students. AP classes, extracurricular activities, and college applications make the years even harder. With all of the new deadlines and events to attend, Senior Skip Day is one that everyone can equally enjoy and look forward to. Whether it is staying at home to sleep in and goof off, or an adventure hours away, seniors will have their best school day in a while. Here is what a few of the seniors of the 2025 graduating class are getting up to on this long Memorial Day weekend.
Samuel Ramirez says he doesn’t have any concrete plans yet. “I’m not a planner in my group of friends and I will go along whatever ride the road takes me. Some of my friends want to go to the beach, not with the rest of the seniors and I think I’ll end up doing that, but if that falls through I’ll be spending the day having fun with my friends in some other way.” It is a common activity for seniors to head to a beach for the day, but not everyone chooses to spend the day with crowds. After going through four years of school together, it would be impossible not to know the other people from the senior class, but many chose to spend it with their closer friends.
That doesn’t mean that people are staying away from the fun activities Senior Skip Day offers. Senior Chloe Djilani plans to take her friends with her down to Lake Compounce. “I found a Groupon for day tickets and we wanted to take a fun day trip. We’ve all known each other for years and I can’t wait to ride all the roller coasters with them instead of being in AP Stats.” Every year, the senior teachers expect an empty day and use it to relax. After AP exams, most classes wind down anyway, and seniors won’t miss much.
It is a tradition that millions of people have partaken in over the years. As wasteful or pointless parents may think it is, the tradition to skip school is a reward for hard workers and those with severe senioritis alike. Ramirez regards the day as “one of those things you look forward to. Like prom or senior assassin, it’s one of those things you hear of and think that’s quintessential senior year, I don’t think it should ever go away.” Lian Fernandes, who plans to head to the beach, explains that “having this tradition of senior skip day is such an awesome thing that happens every year. After 12 years of hard work, we get a day to relax with our friends and let our worries be free.”
With 5 weeks left on the clock for seniors, this day is one of the last events for seniors to take part in before college.
Happy skipping!
