Kyren Lacy, a 24 year old former LSU Wide receiver and NFL draft prospect, died by suicide on April 12, 2025, in Houston Texas. His death occurred just days before a scheduled grand jury hearing related to a fatal car crash in December 2024.
Lacy began his college football career at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette before transferring to LSU in 2022. During the 2024 season he recorded 58 receptions for 866 yards and nine touchdowns, earning Second team All-SEC honors. He had declared for the 2025 NFL Draft and participated in LSU’s pro day on March 26.
In December 2024, Lacy was involved in a car accident in Louisiana that resulted in the death of 78 year old Herman Hall. He was charged with negligent homicide, felony hit and run and reckless operation of a vehicle. Lacy turned himself in and was released on bail, with a grand jury hearing scheduled for April 14, 2025.
On the evening of the event, authorities responded to a call about a domestic disturbance involving Lacy, during which he reportedly discharged a firearm into the ground. He left the scene. Leading to the police chasing him which ended when his car crashed. Lacy was found dead in the car with a gunshot wound on his body.
Lacy’s death made a big impact on the football community. His girlfriend Cydney Theard, gave an emotional speech following Lacy’s death talking about his passion for football and his family. LSU and former teammates expressed their condolences, and his father talked about the importance of mental health awareness, urging parents to engage in open conversations with their children.
