After an attack in Kashmir, tensions between India and Pakistan are high.
On April 22, 2025, militants attacked a group of tourists having a picnic near the town of Pahalgam in a part of India-administered Kashmir. This attack left 26 people dead and 20 injured. India blames Pakistan for this attack. Pakistan says that they have no involvement in it. A group called The Resistance Front first said that they were responsible for the attack online, but they later deleted that post. India now believes that the group is linked to a larger terrorist organization in Pakistan.
The Kashmir regime has been a sensitive and violent area for decades. Both countries control parts of it, but each one claims Kashmir as their own country. Due to this, anything bad that happens in Kashmir causes relations between India and Pakistan to get tense.
After the attack, an Indian government official told the Indian Express that there would be military retaliation. Pakistan’s information minister posted on X that they had knowledge about India saying they might strike again within 24 or 36 hours.
What makes things worse is that both India and Pakistan have access to nuclear weapons. Although no one wants a war, smaller fights and attacks can always end up in something worse.
On May 7 2025, India launched an attack called “Operation Sindoor.” The operation included missile strikes in places that India claimed to be terrorist camps. However, Pakistan claims they were civilian areas. They say that there were 36 overall deaths and 42 injuries. In return, Pakistan shot down several Indian fighter jets and launched drone and missile attacks on cities in India. India countered this with their S-400 missile defense system. This has only caused the situation between Pakistan and India to get even more intense. Now both countries are blaming each other, and things are starting to get worse.
As of May 12, 2025, India and Pakistan have agreed to a ceasefire after several days of fighting, but tensions are still high.
