The 2025 Met Gala was held on May 5th. The theme was “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” which served as a remembrance to the rich history and cultural significance of Black culture and dandyism. This theme explored how fashion has been a powerful form of art, self expression, and resistance within the Black community, highlighting the artistry of tailoring and the evolution of Black style from the 18th century until the present day.
The dress code for the Met Gala, “Tailored for You,” invited attendees to interpret the theme through personalized fashion statements, expressing individuality and transformative bespoke clothing. Co-chaired by influential figures for the Met Gala, such as, Lewis Hamilton, Pharrel Williams, Coleman Domingo, and A$AP Rocky, the event showcased a mix of interpretations that celebrated the identity and cultural heritage of black culture.
Noble attendees embraced the theme with creativity and elegance. Keke Palmer, one of the attendees who went, for example, honored her look from Dorothy Dandridge by wearing a white Vera Wong gown paired with black tailored pants, blending masculine and feminine elegance. Rihanna, confirming her third pregnancy with A$AP, in a custom all-black Ann Demeulemeester ensemble, while A$AP Rocky, one of the gala’s co-chairs, arrived solo to the Met.
The 2025 Met Gala did not only celebrate fashion, but also highlighted its cultural storytelling and identity. Through the lens of Black Dandyism, the event underscored the significance of tailoring in expressing individuality and challenging the societal norms black people had to face throughout history. As attendees departed, they left behind an impacting powerful message: fashion is not just about aesthetics; it’s an art of expression, history, culture, and self.
