Golfers Theodorakis, Stock are in top flight
The Boys Golf team this year has the No. 1 player in the state in senior captain Max Theodorakis, and with his scores and co-captain Andy Stock’s the squad is in the hunt for FCIAC and state glory.
The team is No. 2 in FCIAC with a 8-1 record as the regular season draws to a close.
Coach Jim Tierney doesn’t hold back when speaking of Theodorakis’ skills on the links.
“He’s the best player I’ve coached in 25 years at Danbury High,” he said.
Theodorakis is the squad’s No. 1 and Stock is No. 2. Tierney said it’s a hard duo for any of the team’s rivals to beat.
“They are arguably the top two players in the state,” the coach said.
One of the highlights for the team this year was defeating Ridgefield on its home course; that hasn’t been done by an opponent in four years.
Theodorakis, who has committed to Division I Campbell University in North Carolina, said one of his individual highlights this season was a shot he took on the 7th hole at Richter Park.
“Because it’s a par 5, you have to hit straight over the treetops, and I hit straight over them and I shot an eagle using my 4-iron,” said Theodorakis, who has been playing the game since he was 4.
“I always knew golf was my sport,” said Theodorakis, who was also scouted by Auburn and Arizona. He said he chose Campbell because it will offer him the chance to start his freshman year.
Stock, meanwhile, is planning to attend Monmouth University in New Jersey in the fall. He is last year’s state tournament champ, shooting a 69 and being named All-State. One of his best memories of the year so far was at New Canaan.
“It was a par 3 on the 6th hole,” he recalled, “ and I hit a 5-iron from 180 yards and dropped it five-feet from the hole.”
The rest of the team includes seniors Matt Beaver and Nick Tyrell, junior Ben Theodorakis and freshman Jack Dingerson. They have made the team a serious contender this year and for years to come.
