Freedom’s Journal
February 2, 2017
Freedom’s Journal was the first African-American managed and owned newspaper in the United States. It was founded by John Russwurm and Samuel Cornish on March 16, 1827, in New York City. The newspaper supported their causes and was an outlet to express their views. At its peak subscriptions were $3 per year. It was distributed in eleven states, Haiti, Europe, and Canada. Although it lasted only for 2 years, it influenced the creation of more than 40 black-owned and operated newspapers three decades later.
