‘White Out Epilepsy Challenge’ hits DHS

If you want an excuse to throw a plate of whipped cream in someone’s face then nominate a friend to participate in the White Out Epilepsy Challenge.

Peer Leadership’s Delany Flanagan, Brandon Waterbury, Zac Shuster, and Jessica Robbins, all seniors, started a social media campaign to raise awareness and fundraising money for research.

The brains behind the concept of “whiting out” is quite clever. Shuster says, “Whiteout is used to erase something; we took this meaning and put it to our project. We want to help cure this disease.”

Contributing to the cause is rather simple and is modeled after the ALS Bucket Challenge. Once nominated, one is given the option of a face full of whipped cream or to make a generous donation to CURE — Citizens United for Research in Epilepsy.

“CURE has provided our project with overwhelming support, as they have created a donation page specifically for our White Out Epilepsy Campaign,” Flanagan said.

The campaign has made progress — raising more than $500 and uploading 3o videos to its  Instagram account consisting of videos made by those who have participated.

By taking part in the White Out Epilepsy Challenge, a video is uploaded via social media, nominating other friends or family, in hopes of spreading awareness in a fun and tasty way.

Group members have taken advantage of social media, a key component in today’s society, and using it for the better.

“We know social media can be a powerful too. I have personally seen the effects this disease can have on someone and their life. I knew that this was the cause I wanted to help,” Shuster said.
