Saying Goodbye to Friends
January 23, 2020
As the world is forced to say goodbye to the year 2019, they also parted ways with Friends on Netflix. With the famous sitcom taken off of Netflix, the U.S became devastated on midnight December 31, 2019. Netflix tweeted out on July 9 their official goodbye, “The One Where We Have To Say Goodbye. We’re sorry to see Friends go to Warner’s streaming service at the beginning of 2020 (in The US). Thanks for the memories, gang.”
The removal of the show has taken a toll on the hearts of America, and many have taken their grief on social media. Fans had threatened to “cancel” Netflix, in the new age of cancel culture, if they don’t keep the loved show on the platform. However, it is out of Netflix’s hands since WarnerMedia, who owns the rights to the series, has already made its new home. Fans are now forced to watch the complicated love of Ross and Rachel on the new streaming media, HBO Max, launching in May 2020. Leaving them with no Friends for almost five months.
One DHS students were heartbroken about the news of Friends. Aaliyah Alonso, senior, was a big fan of the sitcom that made her laugh, “The show Friends is so funny and I’m so mad they took it off of Netflix, they need to bring it back because it made me laugh so much.”
Another senior, Storm Jacobs, was extremely disappointed about the removal of Friends has ruined her plans, “I am so mad that they’re taking Friends off of Netflix I love that show. I was actually thinking about watching it again and now I can’t which is very annoying.”
In replacement of losing Friends and even the other popular sitcom, The Office, Netflix has purchased the rights to Seinfeld for 2021, when their contract with Hulu will come to an end. But will Seinfeld fill the empty void in the fans hearts?
As the group of friends closed the door to apartment five, the heartbroken watchers are sadly forced to close their laptops to Netflix. They take on the new year without our six friends, but they will always be there for us because these fans are there for them too. Goodbye Friends and farewell!
