The New York Mets, Boston Red Sox, and New York Yankees will not be going to the World Series this year.
The first local team out of contention was the Mets, a team that started with promise but fell short in the second half of the season. They were eliminated from playoff contention on September 28th, the last day of the regular season.
The second local team eliminated from contention was the Red Sox, a team that was expected to be at the bottom of the division, yet ended up exceeding expectations and scraping their way into the playoffs. The Boston Red Sox won one game against the Yankees in the wild card round, but heartbreakingly ended their season after suffering a loss to the Yankees in games two and three of the wild card series.
Ryan Mackinnon, both a Senior and Yankees Fan, said, “Never thought they would be there honestly, they had a great youth and showed a lot of effort in the series, but ultimately lost to a lack of clutch hitting, bad defense, and Cam Schlittler.”
The final local team eliminated was the Yankees. A two-seed with high expectations, the Yankees made it to the ALDS and showed resiliency before ultimately only winning one game before being eliminated by the Toronto Blue Jays.
“When they lost the East, they lost home-field advantage,” said English Teacher and Yankees fan Fred Kelly.
This deficit dug them into a hole, down two games to Toronto, ultimately sealing their fate.
Mackinnon dives deeper, explaining, “The shortstop Anthony Volpe was a major disappointment.” A young player who has a big name fell short in the New York spotlight.
On the other hand, Kelly said, “Yeah, I think Boston’s undertalented. I think if the fans are being realistic in Boston, they should be very happy about how they played throughout the year. Their future should be very good; they have a very young team; I think they are going to be contenders.”
So, while the young players in New York experienced a harsh time performing this season, it seems like the Red Sox have upside in their young roster, a promising future.
With the local baseball team the fans were rooting for was the Seattle Mariners, but after game 7 elimination, they were directed towards the Toronto Blue Jays or the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Kelly made his opinion known, “I like Toronto, they aren’t intimidated by anyone.”
“The Dodgers have a higher payroll than Toronto, making them an underdog.” Kelly, like most, is rooting for the underdog.
