As college approaches for many seniors, there are many options and paths they can choose for their future. One option is studying abroad. Studying abroad is an opportunity that allows college students to travel the world while also receiving their education. 

Even though this option has been available since 1923, a lot of students never give it any thought. Teens are unaware of the numerous advantages studying abroad entails. While studying abroad, students can acquire “important skills and develop personal networks that enhance their potential as global problem solvers,” says the  U.S. Department of State. Becoming a global problem solver is something our country needs. So if traveling the world helps the U.S. improve as a country, then students should be enabled and encouraged to study overseas.

While studying abroad teaches numerous skills, mastering a new language is one of the most crucial ones. Over time, acquiring new languages has become increasingly important in today’s culture. According to the Department of Education, “as students develop their language fluency, they increase their ability to communicate across cultures and interact positively with people from other countries.” Learning a new language not only enables teenagers to make new friends throughout the world, but it may also greatly benefit resumes in the future, as “bilingual staff are valued for their ability to talk to non-English-speaking customers and business partners,” says the Department of Education. This opens up a door to a multitude of work prospects, which ensures a successful future.  

While the benefits outweigh the negatives, it’s understandable if college students choose not to go down this path due to expenses. The U.S. Department of State knows “traveling is overpriced, but can guarantee scholarship opportunities that can help subside the cost.” But if funds are not an issue, then it’s definitely something students should look into.

Being able to explore and learn about cultures is usually a once-in-a lifetime opportunity. So if given the chance, the most reasonable choice would be to take it.
