In Connecticut, immigrant rights are more than just a talking right, they’re a movement led by organizations like CT Students for a Dream (C4D). This group, founded and driven by undocumented youth, is dedicated to ensuring equity and justice for immigrants. From leading policy campaigns to supporting individual students, C4D continues to amplify the voices of those often silenced.
A Mission Rooted in Advocacy
C4D’s mission is to empower undocumented youth and families through leadership development, community organization, and direct action. The organization has played an important part in pushing for legislative changes, such as expanding healthcare access for immigrant children under Connecticut’s HUSKY program. These efforts ensure that families, regardless of immigration status, can access basic healthcare services, a necessity often taken for granted.
For C4D organizer Najely Clavijo, this mission is deeply personal. Clavijo has shared stories of her family’s struggles navigating healthcare as undocumented immigrants. “[Growing up, I heard] my family say, ‘Don’t get sick, it’s too expensive here,’” she recalled during her testimony before the Connecticut General Assembly. “It’s inhumane to live in fear of getting sick or injured simply because we don’t have access to healthcare.” Reflecting on her work with C4D, she added, “Now, through our work [at C4D], we’re making sure other families don’t have to face the same fears,” Clavijo said.
Policy Wins and Ongoing Efforts
One of C4D’s significant achievements has been advocating for the expansion of HUSKY healthcare coverage to children regardless of immigrant status. This policy change has already benefited countless families, including Clavijo’s younger brother who now has access to regular medical care.
C4D’s activism expands beyond healthcare. The organization also campaigns for educational equity, deportation defense, and pathways to higher education for undocumented students. Their work empowers young people to take leadership roles in their communities and advocate for systemic change.
Building a Better Future
C4D’s impact resonates deeply within Connecticut’s immigrant communities. By holding rallies, organizing workshops, and meeting with policymakers, the organization is creating change. They’ve also inspired a new generation of youth leaders who are eager to take on the role of advocacy.
