As students stepped off the bus on February 14, the air at Danbury High School was filled with excitement. Many held carefully wrapped gifts, vibrant bouquets, teddy bears, and boxes of sweets, ready to embrace the day of love with friends and loved ones. With club fundraisers, special events, and unique student traditions, Valentine’s Day at DHS proved to be a day of connection, celebration, and heartfelt surprises.
This year, clubs at DHS took the opportunity to make the holiday special. The Spanish Honor Society organized a successful Valentine’s fundraiser, selling themed bundles during lunch waves. CT Students for a Dream (C4D) hosted an after-school event to celebrate friendships while advocating for immigrant healthcare rights. The Fashion Club, alongside other student organizations, held a pre-Valentine’s bake sale and activity night. Meanwhile, students found personal ways to celebrate, whether through exchanging gifts, surprising friends, or even turning their hobbies into small businesses.
Valentine’s Day Festivities and Fundraisers
The Spanish Honor Society accomplished one of the largest fundraisers, offering a variety of gift bundles, from classic roses to stuffed animals paired with chocolates. According to club president Litzy Chacon, the inspiration came from a desire to unite the school community while raising funds for the club’s end-of-year trip. “The response was amazing. We even sold out of a few items, [especially] the roses,” Chacon shared. With their dedication and collaboration, the fundraiser ultimately raised over $400, and due to its success, the club plans to expand next year.
CT Students for a Dream brought a unique twist to Valentine’s Day with their after-school event. Beyond celebrating friendships, the gathering encouraged students to write testimonies in support of the HUSKY for Immigrants campaign, which advocates for expanded healthcare. Club advisor Najely Clavijo reflected on the event’s impact, “It was heartwarming to see students so engaged. We collected 80 testimonies towards our goal of 150 in Danbury.”
The Fashion Club, in collaboration with the International Food Club and the DHS Theater Program, hosted a bake sale and activity night on February 13. Advisor Angelica Figueroa introduced karaoke, bracelet making, and card crafting, all of which proved to be hits among attendees. “The students kept the energy alive. The singing never stopped and everyone was incredibly supportive,” Figueroa said. Although turnout was lighter than expected, the event successfully raised funds for various student programs.
Students Share Their Valentine’s Experience
Beyond school-organized events, students celebrated the holiday in their own ways. Sophomore Emily Pizarro shared that she and a friend exchanged last-minute but meaningful gifts. “I got two bags of unicorn marshmallow candy, and I gave my friend a gummy bear-themed Valentine. We both really appreciated the thought behind it.”
For sophomore Evelyn Samaniego, Valentine’s Day took an unexpected turn when she received a surp

rise candy gram from an anonymous sender. “The moment they called my name in class, I was in shock. It was such a small gesture, but it made my whole day brighter,” she recalled. Later that evening, she celebrated with her family at Charlito’s restaurant.
Additionally, some students turned the holiday into a business opportunity. Several handmade flower makers took orders in advance, selling custom floral arrangements to classmates. Their creativity and craftsmanship allowed them to spread joy while earning some extra money.
The Lasting Impact of Small Gestures
The overwhelming response to Valentine’s Day at DHS demonstrates how small acts of kindness can make a big impact. Whether through organized fundraisers, student-led initiatives, or heartfelt surprises, the day serves as a reminder of the power of appreciation and friendship.
As clubs look ahead next year, there are plans to expand fundraising options, introduce new interactive events, and continue traditions that bring the student body together. One thing is certain, at DHS, Valentine’s Day is more than just a holiday, it’s a celebration of community, connection, and the little moments that make high school memories unforgettable.
