The Dominican Winter League is a league where professional baseball players play once the MLB ends. There are six teams: Licey (Santo Domingo), Escogido (Santo Domingo), Las Aguilas (Santiago), Los Gigantes (San Francisco de Macoris), Las Estrellas (San Pedro de Macoris), and Los Toros (La Romana).
Those six teams have some of the best baseball players in the Dominican Republic, and they all compete to win the Dominican Winter League Championship. The season has 50 regular games. The best four teams move on to the playoffs.
This year, Escogido and Licey made it to the final series, which lasted seven games. The first six games were blowouts between both teams, but Game 7 was one to remember.
The game started with Licey going up 4-2 in the 4th inning. After that, Escogido tied it, and it stayed like that for the rest of the game. Then, MLB superstar Junior Caminero playing for Escogido, in the top of the 8th, hit a 450-foot home run to give his team the lead, which led to them winning the whole tournament.
Caminero won MVP of the series because he played really well. That team was stacked from top to bottom. It started with their Hall of Fame manager, Albert Pujols. It was his first season managing, and people are already looking forward to seeing what achievements he continues to get.
After the Dominican League, the winning team moves on to the Caribbean Series, where Escogido beat Mexico and became Caribbean Champions. This year of the Winter League was full of excitement and great baseball, and everyone is looking at what’s next to come.
