An in of 2024: Going to the Danbury Public Library

Danbury High School is lucky enough to have its own chapter of the National English Honors Society, NEHS, with over 70 members who hold and display their passion for the English language and community impact.

This year, NEHS has started an outreach project at the Danbury Public Library. This is just a part of the handful of community service initiatives they’ve launched this year—one at Hayestown Elementary, Broadview Middle, and Danbury High, as well as another at Friends of Danbury Library.

NEHS has two groups working at the Danbury Public Library, and, as club advisor Mr. Hitchcock explains, it goes “along with the idea to have community involvement at every level, elementary school, middle school, high school.”

The Danbury Public Library offers a multitude of opportunities for volunteering and community service. Whether this is read-alouds, book-to-art projects, or other English-related kids activities, there is an opportunity to interact with the kids in hopes of expanding their love of reading and English. There is nostalgia in these experiences too, with common memories of “spend[ing] hours there, delighting in our little book-related art projects, and sitting patiently with legs crossed and heads turned up at the read-alouds” resurfacing, says the President of NEHS, Pearl Chia.

This project is something the officers of NEHS are proud of and hold highly. “I’m so impressed with how NEHS has grown and expanded this year, in comparison to the two outreaches we had last year and none the years previous,” Chia further explains.

Being able to give back to the library by providing other kids with the experiences this community has always looked forward to as kids is a contribution that this group of students is more than happy to offer.

Although we’ve grown, the Danbury Public Library remains a significant town structure that nourishes the minds and growth of adults and children around us. With NEHS’ involvement in the library, the interest and remembrance of the joy it brings have resurfaced and spread. There’s always time to make the library a fulfilling place for each individual person, regardless of your place in NEHS or any club. We’ve heard a popular New Year resolution is to be an active visiter of the library; come be a part of it!

If you have any further questions about NEHS, please feel free to reach out to Justin Hitchcock, Pearl Chia, or any active member!

Hey everyone, my name is Linda, and I am a senior here at DHS :) I decided to join the Hatter's Herald this year because writing has always been something I am fond of, and is definitely something I'd like to pursue in the future (along with political science). I'm a member of NEHS, an intern for the Danbury Library, and also hold a title as the Secretary for the DHS Class of 2024. Outside of school, I love movies, music, and books, as well as spending time with my cat. I am always interested in learning about new things and sharing information with people, so I look forward to publishing articles for our newspaper!
