In a historic moment, Travis Hunter of Colorado has won the 2024 Heisman Trophy, given to college football’s most outstanding player. Hunter is a dynamic two-way performer as a wide receiver and cornerback, only the second player in history to take the trophy— first being primary defensive player Michigan’s Charles Woodson in 1997.
All Colorado DB/WR, Travis Hunter, finished the season with some crazy numbers. He earned 92 catches for 1,152 yards, adding 14 touchdowns on the offensive side, while finishing with 32 tackles, accompanied by 4 interceptions on defense. His nonstop performance in helping the Colorado Buffaloes resulted in an outstanding season.
At the Heisman ceremony at Lincoln Center in New York City, Hunter got emotional in an acceptance speech for the award he dedicated toward his father, Travis Hunter Sr., who wasn’t able to attend. With a quivering voice, Hunter said, “I did it for you man.”
His journey to this was well-punctuated with landmark achievements. Hunter is the first player in college football history to win both the Chuck Bednarik Award, honoring the nation’s top defensive player, and the Fred Biletnikoff Award. Honoring the nation’s top defensive player in the Fred Biletnikoff Award, recognizing the nation’s best wide receiver, in the same season.
Looking ahead, Hunter has declared for the 2025 NFL draft, in which he is projected to go within the top five selections. His desire to play both offensive and defensive professionally simply underlines his commitment to the redefinition of versatility in football.
Travis Hunter’s win of the Heisman Trophy will probably cement his legacy in college football, raising the bar for all of the other players who hope to be great on both sides of the ball.
