The NBA has been shaken by sports betting and insider gambling cases for the first time since the 2007 referee Tim Donaghy case. The FBI discovered Donaghy had been betting on the games he was refereeing, and his punishment included a 15-month jail sentence and a 3-year supervised release.
Modern-day Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups, arrested in Oregon, and Heat guard Terry Rozier have been indicted on charges of wire fraud conspiracy and money-laundering conspiracy. Each count carries up to 20 years in prison. Billups’ cases don’t stop there; he was also linked to rigged underground poker games by the mafia.
Hours after the arrest, Rozier appeared in court in Orlando in handcuffs and shackles. Billups appeared in Portland, Oregon, in front of a judge the same day. Both men were released from custody under certain conditions.
Billups is scheduled for court on Monday, November 24th, 2025, at the federal courthouse in Brooklyn, New York. Rozier is expected at the same courthouse on Monday, December 8th, 2025.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Robert Norway said Rozier would be released from custody after using his Florida home as bond and surrendering his passport. His travel is limited to the continental United States, and he is prohibited from gambling.
Both individuals have been placed on leave from their teams, the NBA said in a statement.
Across the league, players believe the scandal has made them feel the game is losing impact and integrity. Players also say the game could do without the growing influence of gambling. Some players even receive threatening messages from angry gamblers.
NBA fans are conflicted after catching wind of the situation. Senior at DHS Anthony Valensuela, believes, “This puts attention on the league, but not for a good reason. It kinda gives the league a bad reputation.”
This serious misconduct by Rozier and Billups has harmed the organization, and situations like this affect the fans and make people less likely to watch basketball. What should be a league for playing basketball is now being shaped into a league defined by drama and crime.
The league will now be watched very closely by fans and journalists. This scandal has resulted in the upset of many fans and players. This damages the reputation of the players, the league, and the fans. The fallout may continue for months.
With all of this happening, all the NBA can do is cooperate with the government. This scandal may serve as a wake-up call for players to watch their behavior off the court, as it can be just as impactful as what they do on the court. Ryan Mackinnon thinks the NBA’s cooperation is a wise decision.
Senior Ryan Mackinnon explained, “Ultimately, the league can recover from this; it’s all up to how they cooperate and what they will do against something like this.”
