No one eats alone

They have adopted two initiatives to be implemented in education systems throughout Connecticut entitled “Start With Hello” and “Say Something.” Both programs teach students grades K-12 skills to reach out to those who may be struggling with chronic social isolation and create a culture of acceptance and connectivity within their school.

The day before school began this year, senior Lizzy Newbold addressed faculty and administration during the district’s opening ceremonies at the DHS auditorium. She gave a powerful presentation on the tragedy in Sandy Hook, her connection to it, and some of the initiatives under way through Sandy Hook Promise to thwart such tragedies from happening again. Newbold, who is a member of the Hatters’ Herald staff, agreed to allow the newspaper to share her presentation with the student body. These are her notes that accompany her slide presentation, which brought a standing ovation from teachers and administrators.
